8/6 FIFO Jobs

-

An 8/6 roster is eight days on site and six days off. It has become one of the most sought after rosters in Australian mining because the swing is short enough that you are never away from home for long, and the six days off feel like a proper break. This page lists every job where the employer states 8/6.

Where you find it

Several of the big iron ore operations in the Pilbara run 8/6 for their operators and maintainers, and BHP has listed 8/6 roles from Port Hedland and Carrapateena on this board. Blasting contractors also run 8/6 crews, with Orica flying charge-up operators from Adelaide on that roster. It is less common on construction and in Queensland coal, where 7/7 is the usual short roster.

Things to know

Because the cycle is fourteen days, your days off drift through the week. One swing you are home over a weekend, the next you are home midweek. Some people love that, some find it hard to plan around. The flights are frequent, which is fine from Perth or Adelaide and harder from interstate.

The other common short roster in Queensland is 7/7, and those jobs show on the Brisbane page.
