Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

Who we’re looking for  

 

As Superintendent – Ventilation & Infrastructure, you will be Tanami’s technical authority on atmospheric control, mine ventilation and supply of services in the underground. You’ll take ownership of a critical system that underpins both safety and productivity, while guiding a dedicated engineering team towards excellence.

This role offers a rare balance of strategic influence and hands-on impact. From developing long-term ventilation and infrastructure strategies and budgets to monitoring system integrity and ensuring compliance with industry standards, you’ll play a key part in driving operational success at one of Newcrest’s flagship assets.

You will have an ability to inspire, mentor, and guide a team while building on your solid foundation in ventilation engineering.

 

This leadership role will see you:

  • Formulate and execute comprehensive ventilation & infrastructure plans to ensure adequate airflow and air quality and services availability throughout the mine at peak loads.
  • Continuously refine ventilation & services Infrastructure systems to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and maintain compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor and assess ventilation & services Infrastructure system performance using data analytics and key performance indicators to identify trends and areas for improvement. Formulate and deliver regular reports on ventilation system performance, maintenance activities, and compliance to senior management.
  • Execute regular inspections and audits of ventilation systems to ensure they meet operational and safety requirements.
  • Adhere to all ventilation activities comply with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations and standards. Identify potential risks related to ventilation & services Infrastructure and formulate mitigation strategies to minimize operational disruptions and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate with other departments, such as mine operations and safety, mine planning and fixed plant maintenance to ensure ventilation requirements are integrated into overall mine planning and operations.
  • Collaborate with contractors to ensure compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and contractual obligations, while maintaining alignment with organizational goals.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership in managing risks, incident investigations, and technical reviews, in operational or technical environments.  

You will also possess the following: 

  • Formal education qualifications in Mining Engineering or a related field.
  • Advanced expertise in ventilation system design, optimisation, and regulatory compliance, developed through extensive practical experience in mine ventilation.
  • Experienced leader with a track record of managing teams and driving performance through effective coaching and mentoring.
  • Solid understanding of mine production and mine planning.  
  • Solid understanding risk management and business improvement principles and practices. Advanced proficiency with data analytics, regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrated competence in managing projects and contracts from planning through execution.

 

This permanent position will be based on-site at the Tanami Mine Operation in the remote Northern Territory working on an 8:6 fly in, fly out flexible roster from Perth, Darwin, Brisbane or Alice Springs.
