Pilbara FIFO Jobs

-

The Pilbara is iron ore country, and it employs more FIFO workers than any other region in Australia. The mines sit inland around Newman, Tom Price and Paraburdoo, the ore goes by rail to Port Hedland, Dampier and Cape Lambert, and the whole system needs operators, trades, rail crews and camp staff around the clock.

The work

Open pit mining means haul truck, excavator, dozer and drill operators. The fixed plant means crushing and processing crews, and fitters and electricians to keep it running. The railways employ drivers, track workers and trainers. The camps employ chefs, cleaners, utilities and airport attendants. Rosters here are mostly 2:1 or 8/6, with flights from Perth and sometimes from Busselton or Geraldton.

Getting in

A heavy rigid licence and a clean record open the door to a lot of Pilbara work, and the big miners run entry level programs that train you on the machine. Trades need their ticket plus a high risk work licence where the role calls for it. Everyone needs the pre-employment medical.

BHP and MACA have both listed Pilbara roles on this board. For the wider state, see the Western Australia page.
