Welding FIFO Jobs

Welding work in FIFO comes in two kinds. The first is maintenance welding on mine sites, which is mostly done by boilermakers and covers wear plates, liners, chutes and structural repair. The second is project welding on pipelines, tank farms, plant construction and shutdowns, where employers want welders with coded tickets for the process and position they are running.

What employers ask for

For maintenance work, a fabrication trade certificate and mining experience. For project work, current welding qualifications to the relevant Australian standard, usually AS 1554 for structural or AS 4041 for pressure work, and a welder's log or test coupon results. Both kinds want confined space and working at heights tickets. A high risk work licence is needed when the job includes rigging or dogging.

Rosters

Maintenance welders on a mine site are usually 2:1 or 8/6. Project welders on a construction job often run longer swings such as 3:1 or 4:1 for the life of the project, then the job ends. The listing on this board states which.
