FIFO Geology and Survey Jobs

Geologists and surveyors are on site for every day the mine runs. Mine geologists map the ore body, log drill core and control grade. Field assistants and samplers do the physical work of logging, sampling and preparing core. Mine surveyors set out the pit and the underground development and keep the survey control accurate. Exploration camps employ the same people on remote tenements.

What employers ask for

Geologists need a geology degree; entry level graduate positions exist and experienced roles want several years on a mine or in exploration. Field assistants and samplers need no degree, a manual licence, fitness and the ability to work in the heat. Surveyors need a surveying degree or a mine surveying qualification, and in some states a registered mine surveyor's authorisation for senior roles.

Rosters

Mine based geology and survey roles run 8/6 or 2:1 depending on the site. Exploration work is often 2:1 or 3:1 from a regional base with a field camp rather than a village. The listing gives the roster and the point of hire.
