FIFO Rail Jobs
The iron ore miners in the Pilbara run some of the heaviest freight railways in the world, and they run them with their own FIFO workforce: train drivers, track maintainers, signalling and communications technicians, rolling stock maintainers and the trainers who keep everyone qualified. Queensland's coal railways and the mine loading facilities employ similar crews.
What employers ask for
Train driver roles want a Certificate IV in Train Driving or the willingness to complete the employer's driver training program, plus a category 1 rail medical. Track roles want the civil and track units from the Certificate II or III in Rail Infrastructure, and a track vehicle licence helps. Signalling roles want an electrical or electronic trade. Trainer roles want the TAE40122 and deep rail experience.
Who has listed here
BHP has listed a specialist rail trainer at Port Hedland on an 8/6 roster from Perth. BHP, Rio Tinto, Fortescue and Roy Hill all advertise rail roles on their own careers sites, which is where the apply links go.
Everything else in the region is on the Pilbara page.
