About the Role

BHP's Western Australia Iron Ore rail team is hiring qualified shunting operators for its yards at Port Hedland. The role runs on a two weeks on, two weeks off roster, flying in and out from Perth to Port Hedland. BHP also offers a residential option for people living in Port Hedland, on a 6:6 roster. You will help move trains and rollingstock safely around the yards that feed BHP's Pilbara iron ore exports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Couple and uncouple rollingstock, including splitting and joining trains and attaching or detaching ore cars
  • Direct and control train and rollingstock movements between yard locations
  • Carry out safety checks such as brake tests and roll-by inspections
  • Put together shunting plans
  • Follow radio protocols and keep communications clear

About You

  • Certificate II in Shunting or equivalent (mandatory)
  • Qualified shunter with heavy haul rail experience
  • Able to obtain and hold a Category 1 Rail Medical
  • Current C class driver's licence (mandatory)
  • Strong safety focus, good observation skills and sound time management
  • Knowledge of signalling equipment is an advantage
  • Willing to complete BHP's pre-employment checks, which can include police, medical, drug and alcohol, and right to work checks
