FIFO from Adelaide: Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and the SA mines

Adelaide is the departure point for most FIFO work in South Australia. BHP flies crews from Adelaide to Olympic Dam on 7/7 and to Prominent Hill and Carrapateena on 8/6, Iluka flies to its Jacinth-Ambrosia mineral sands mine, and the camp and contractor companies that service those sites hire out of Adelaide too. The flight to Olympic Dam takes about an hour and ten minutes, and some employers also give you the choice of living in Roxby Downs or driving in from a regional town.

Who flies workers out of Adelaide

We read the current ads on each employer's own careers site on 1 November 2026. BHP is the biggest name by a distance, because it now owns all three of the big copper mines in the state. Its Olympic Dam jobs mostly give you three ways to get to work. The electrical reticulation trade assistant ad, for example, lists a house in Roxby Downs, FIFO from Adelaide, or DIDO from regional SA where that applies. The light vehicle maintenance supervisor ad says the same.

Prominent Hill and Carrapateena are FIFO sites. BHP's Prominent Hill ads say the operation runs on an 8/6 FIFO roster, and its senior backfill engineer flies from Adelaide or Port Augusta. The lead mine geologist at Carrapateena is also advertised as FIFO 8/6.

Outside BHP, Iluka has an emergency services officer at Jacinth-Ambrosia on 8/6, flying from Adelaide or Ceduna. Orica wants underground charge-up operators for its SA team on 8/6 FIFO from Adelaide, with accommodation and meals on site. PYBAR has an underground electrician with its raise bore crew at Prominent Hill on 14/14, with flights, accommodation and meals covered. Boart Longyear lists its underground diamond drillers at Adelaide on 2/1 or 2/2, with return flights from anywhere in Australia.

Civil work counts too. Exact Contracting is hiring grader and plant operators for remote SA projects, with paid flights from the capital cities and camp on site. Its earthworks manager ad, for NT and SA jobs, is 14 on and 7 off.

The camps are the other big employer. ISS runs mine villages in SA and hires utilities, team leaders and an airport reporting officer at the Carrapateena village, all flying from Adelaide. Its utilities ad says interstate applicants may not be considered unless they're moving to SA. Australian Camp Services has utility and cook jobs with an Adelaide point of hire on 2/1. For the full list of employers we've checked, see our page of companies hiring FIFO direct.

Where the sites are

Olympic Dam is about 560 km north of Adelaide, near Roxby Downs, Andamooka and Woomera. BHP mines copper, uranium, gold and silver there, all underground, and smelts and refines on site. Its 2026 annual report puts the milling capacity at 11 million tonnes a year, and copper has come out of the mine since 1988.

Carrapateena is the closest of the three copper mines, at 472 km north-west of Adelaide by BHP's figure, reached by a 60 km private road. Prominent Hill is the furthest, about 650 km north-west, 45 km off the Stuart Highway. Its open pit closed in 2018 and the mining there is now all underground. BHP has owned it since 2023.

Jacinth-Ambrosia is out on the west coast side of the state. Iluka puts it 270 km north of the Port of Thevenard near Ceduna, which is why Ceduna is one of its two departure points. Iluka says the mine employs 110 people and calls it the world's largest zircon mine.

Then there's the Cooper Basin. Santos flies contractors to Moomba, and its contractor guide from June 2024 says every Santos charter to the Cooper Basin is flown by Alliance Airlines. We found no current Santos ad for Moomba, so we can't tell you what roster it hires on right now.

BHP says its SA copper business supports about 8,000 jobs. That's jobs supported, not a head count at the gate, and BHP doesn't publish one for each mine.

The flight and Adelaide Airport

The Roxby Downs council says Alliance Airlines flies between Adelaide and Olympic Dam Airport, about 10 km from town, and the flight takes 1 hour 10 minutes. You can buy a seat on that route yourself; Alliance's booking page showed one-way fares from $172 when we looked.

Charters can leave from the main terminal. Santos tells its Cooper Basin passengers to check in at Terminal 1, the main terminal, at least 90 minutes before the flight, wearing enclosed shoes. They get 20 kg of checked bag and 7 kg of carry-on.

Parking is the cost most people forget. Adelaide Airport runs a FIFO parking program, but it works through your employer. If your employer signs up, you get an access card, you park in P1, P2 or P3 without booking, and the cost comes out of your pay by salary sacrifice at standard drive-up rates. If your employer isn't in it, you're paying the normal rates yourself. The airport says P3 Long Term is the cheapest car park, a 7 to 10 minute walk from the terminal. Ask about this at the interview, because over a year of swings it adds up.

Rosters and pay on SA ads

Olympic Dam runs mostly on 7/7. The drill and blast operator and the trade assistant ads are both a 7/7 rotating day and night roster, and BHP's entry-level miner ad spells it out as 7 days, 7 off, 7 nights, 7 off on 12-hour shifts. Prominent Hill, Carrapateena and Jacinth-Ambrosia are 8/6. Contractors and camp companies are all over the place: 14/14 for PYBAR's electrician and ISS's village team leader, 2/1 for Australian Camp Services and Boart Longyear, 2/2 for PYBAR's drill supervisor. Our rosters guide explains how each of these feels over a year, and the 7/7 roster jobs are listed together on the board.

On pay, the SA ads say less than the Queensland coal ads do. None of the BHP, Iluka, Orica, PYBAR or Boart Longyear ads we read gives a figure. The ones that do are camp and civil jobs. Australian Camp Services lists its FIFO utility at $40 to $41 an hour and its cook/utility at $41 to $43. ISS lists casual FIFO trades out of Perth and Adelaide at $40 to $50 an hour. Exact Contracting doesn't give an hourly rate but pays a retention bonus of up to $3,000 a year.

Life on site and in Roxby Downs

BHP's Olympic Dam ads describe the village: a tavern, golf simulators, a gym and outdoor courts, themed dinner nights, and a daily bus into Roxby Downs for shopping and the doctor. Iluka's Jacinth-Ambrosia camp has a gym, pools, sports courts, rec rooms, wifi and Foxtel. If you'd like to work in one, the camp and village jobs are where you'll find the people who run these places.

Roxby Downs is the main reason some Olympic Dam staff don't fly at all. The town was set up in 1988 to serve the mine, under an agreement between the state and the mine owner that's now BHP. It had 3,671 people at the 2021 census, a figure that leaves out FIFO workers staying at the mine. The council is run by an administrator appointed by the state minister, not elected councillors, and BHP and the state each put in up to $300,000 a year to cover its deficits.

SA safety rules and the tickets you need

SafeWork SA is the safety regulator for SA mines and quarries. Mining sits inside the state's general Work Health and Safety Regulations 2012, with extra duties for mines: a safety management system and a plan for each principal mining hazard, such as ground stability. The Department for Energy and Mining deals with mining leases and approvals, not your safety.

There's no state-wide mining induction card in SA like the Standard 11 that Queensland coal mines ask for. SafeWork SA puts the induction on each mine: the operator has to train you in fatigue, drug and alcohol rules, the emergency plan and your own safety duties, and keep a record of it. In practice you'll do a site induction when you start. Employers still ask for tickets of their own, and our post on FIFO tickets and medicals covers what they usually want.

If you have no mining background, look at BHP's underground entry-level miner ad at Olympic Dam. It says no mining experience is needed and BHP trains you up as a truck operator, nipper or general service miner. BHP is also visiting Renmark in December to meet candidates from the Riverland. For training you can do first, SA's My Training catalogue lists the Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation (RII20120) and the Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations (RII30120). Our guide to getting a FIFO job with no experience covers the rest.

The zone tax offset if you fly from Adelaide

Roxby Downs and the Olympic Dam mine town site are on the ATO's zone list as Zone B special areas. The ATO's 2025-26 table puts the base offset for a special area at $1,173. But the offset goes on where you usually live, not where you work. If home is Adelaide, you can't claim it, however many nights you sleep at Olympic Dam. That rule has applied to FIFO workers since 1 July 2015, when the federal Budget cut them out. If Roxby Downs becomes your usual home, you're inside the zone.

Before you apply

Read the roster and the travel line in every ad before you apply. Some BHP ads let you choose FIFO, DIDO or living in town; some ISS ads want you living in SA already; Boart Longyear flies drillers from anywhere in Australia. If you live in Perth or Brisbane, read our FIFO from Perth and FIFO from Brisbane posts first, because most SA employers fly from Adelaide and getting there would be on you.

Your resume is what gets you past the first sort. If you'd like one written for FIFO applications, with your tickets, rosters and site experience where a recruiter looks first, our FIFO resume service can write it for you.
